Alcohol testing is not always feasible as a pre-employment screening tool because alcohol is flushed from the body in as little as eight hours. While breathelizers can be used, blood-drawn alcohol testing is the most effective and defensible measurement. Still, many organizations require it before employment — and as a condition of continued employment upon “reasonable suspicion” or if a job-related accident warrants it. Companies contemplating alcohol testing should first assure that the company has an alcohol policy in place.
The one caution we would raise is that your organization should first assure that a sound drug and alcohol policy is in place. It should become the “rule book” by which you apply personnel decisions that deal with drug or alcohol use or abuse in the workplace, and it will help your legal defense in the event that an adverse action you take is challenged.
We’ll help you find the right solution for your business to ensure success when hiring, contracting, leasing and meeting industry laws and regulations.
