Volunteer Workforce

Many non-profit and for-profit organizations make good use of volunteers to carry out their missions. Examples are civic groups, professional firms, hospitals, and various social and humanitarian entities.

Although volunteers are not considered “employees” under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, entities that assimilate volunteers should treat them as they would their own employees since volunteers operate "in their space" and in their name--and their actions can reflect on the organization. When feasible, the best practice is to screen volunteers as you would regular employees. But if budgetary or time constraints prohibit the same treatment you have an economical alternative: VolunteerSCREEN.

This search combines a national criminal history database check with a national sex offender registry check to identify potentially violent criminals and sex offenders before they come into contact with at-risk populations.

Please note that this is not a true ‘nationwide’ or comprehensive national search; rather, it is considered "multi-jurisdictional," which means that it depends on the records of participating states and counties. By our estimation, it covers about 60% to 70% of the criminal history records available around the United States. Originating sources may include: county court records, state repository records, or state correctional records.
